close-out
A wave that breaks all at once along its entire length, offering no open face to ride. In surf, the opposite of a peeling wave โ a wall of white water collapsing simultaneously. Also used for a set of waves so large and relentless that no paddle-out is possible.
Etymology
Surfing slang, American. The wave "closes out" like a door slamming shut.
