braided river

A river that divides into a network of interwoven channels separated by shifting bars and islands of gravel and sand. Braided rivers form where the sediment load exceeds the river's ability to carry it in a single channel โ€” the water splits, recombines, and splits again, endlessly rearranging itself. Seen from above, the pattern resembles hair being braided.
Etymology
