monadnock
moh-NAD-nok
An isolated hill or mountain that stands above a surrounding plain because it was composed of rock more resistant to erosion than the material that once surrounded it. A monadnock is what's left standing when everything around it has been worn away โ the survivor in a landscape of attrition. An inselberg is the same concept in arid terrain; monadnock is the term used in temperate and humid regions.
Etymology
Named for Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire, which was studied in the 19th century as a type example of an erosional remnant.
